Compared with ἄ(Ϝ)ελλα (q. v.) \< *ἄϜε-λ-ι̯ᾰ (Chantr. Form. 136) and ἄημι; further with ἀυτμή (q. v.), but the `ablaut' is unexplained. Chantr. points to the difference in meaning with ἄημι. Diff.
